Daut (Knopf) Born into slavery in 1767 on the island of Grenada, Henry Christophe fought in the Haitian revolution under Toussaint Louverture before crowning himself king of the newly independent island nation and taking up residence in his grandiose palace, Sans Souci (a misnomer, given that a cascading series of soucis would eventually lead to his political downfall, and suicide). A Yale professor here offers up a thorough (656-page) biography of the controversial figure.
