A French and African diaspora studies expert argued the crucial significance of the Haitian Revolution in broader anti-colonial history at a Georgetown University event Feb. 18.
Marlene Daut, a professor at Yale University who specializes in Haitian history and culture, highlighted that traditional historical narratives overlook the Haitian Revolution’s impact on anticolonial history and criticized French historical narratives’ avoidance of its colonial past. The event — part of the “Worlds of Revolution” series, a historical lecture series which honors the United States’s bisesquicentennial anniversary of independence — was hosted by Georgetown’s Office of the Vice President for Global Engagement.
